Sergey Boldyrev studied painting at Saratov School of Fine Arts. In 1974, he was appointed Chief Stage Designer of Saratov Light Opera where he released 53 productions of modern and classical repertoire. His stage sets for Dunayevski's  Wind of Freedom and Kalmann's Tschardaschkoenigin won him «best designer» prize at the regional competition «Teatralnaya Vesna».

S.Boldyrev has been working for many theatres throughout Russia, his record exceeding 100 productions including The Merry Widow by Legar in  Alma-Ata, Marica by Kalmann in Makhachkala, The White Acacia by I.Dunayevski in Orenburg, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker by Tchaikovski in Krasnodar, Madhouse by V.Erofeyev in Penza.

In 2003, he was appointed Chief Stage Designer for Saratov Opera and Ballet, having since made the stage sets for operas and ballets Un Ballo in Maschera by J.Verdi, Zircusprinzessin by Kalmann, The Hump-back Horse by R.Stchedrin, Russian premieres of  Thumbelina and Treasure Island by Banevich, The Snow Queen by J.Kolodub, Kasanova to the music by T.Albinoni, L.Beethoven and A.Vivaldi, V.Mozart, Grande Waltz by I.Strauss, The Girl and Death by V.Kovalev, The Mystery of Tango by A.Piazzola, Retro Styled Concert dedicated to I.Dunayevski. In 2007, Sergey Boldyrev was awarded the title of Merited Artiste of Russia.
