Competitions: Prize winner in 6th National Glinka Vocal Competition (1982), Prize winner at World Youth and Students Festival in Berlin (1973).
Additional Information: Member of Saratov opera since 1968. A colourful and sonorous lyrical baritone. Honourable titles awarded the singer include Merited Artist of Karakalpak Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (1974), Merited Artist of the Russian Federation (1976), and Peoples Artist of the USSR (1987). In 1981, Leonid Smetannikov was awarded a Sign of Honour Order and a Memorial Medal of the Soviet Peace Foundation. In 1982, he was declared Laureate of the Russian Federation Glinka National Award. Over two decades now, professor Leonid Smetannikov has been Voice and Opera Faculty Chair at Saratov State Conservatoire of Music.

For many years since, Leonid Smetannikov has been Panel member for Glinka International Voice Competition. He is also Jury member for the Competition of voice contests winners annually held within the frame of Sobinov Festival of Music. His recital traditionally included in every Sobinov Festivals programme is one of its key events.
The artist has appeared in Russia, Finland, Poland, Bulgaria, Austria, France, Italy, China, Mexico, Portugal, Japan, New Zealand, and the USA.
